Dig In to These Early Spring Gardening Tips

Just as Punxsutawney Phil predicted, an early spring is upon us in Philadelphia. With the warmer weather comes nurturing your wintered-over garden back to life. Anyone who has seen a yard in full bloom knows how a beautiful garden can elevate any property. Here are a few tips for early spring gardening that will lighten your load and ensure that your seeds thrive:

Order summer-flowering bulbs

Summer will be here before you know it. Prepare for the sunny days to come by ordering flowers like lilies and gladioli that can be planted in the early spring.

Sow seeds that are no longer in season

Now is the time to start off any seeds that need a longer growing season. Geraniums, begonias, and antirrhinums are all seeds that can be sowed in the winter for beautiful blooms in the future months.

Tidy up flower beds

Clear out the old to make room for the new. A general cleanup of your borders and beds will create a great foundation for your flowers to thrive.

Create a composting area

Looking for a place to dispose of all the dead organic matter you’ve cleared out? Set up a composting area if you haven’t already for an earth-friendly disposal method. Once the compostable material has broken down, you will be left with rich compost on which your plants will thrive.

Happy gardening!
